FOOD. concrete, steel, paint, canned food, can opener, dirt grass

Subject: Paul Taylor’s project FOOD, part of his Anonymous Infrastructure project, is a concrete hole or tube in the ground. It is about 12″ deep and about 11″ in diameter with a grate at the bottom and a cover to place on the top. On the cover there is a label that says FOOD and another label underneath that says help yourself. The tube contains canned food and a can opener.

1. The first possible meaning of this piece could be to help people in need. This could be somewhere that someone who is homeless or struggling with money could go to be provided with a free meal without being made to feel like they are asking/begging for it.

2. The second possible meaning could be to promote random acts of kindness. Not a lot of people will go out of their way to help people in need but seeing someone else doing this could be inspirational to those who need the extra push. After seeing this maybe more people will consider  doing something for someone in need.

Steal this Project

image

Subject: Steal this Project is a collaborative art piece that features several different artists work. The art used in this piece are rocks that are decorated however the artist sees fit and left outside of the 3rd Street Gallery in Philadelphia to be stolen.

Content: 1. The first possible meaning of this piece could be to allow viewers to take home a piece of their experience. Most art works are sold with a very high price tag so a majority of the people who visit galleries do so only to admire the work. However, by creating art that has no price tag this allows everyone to take home a piece of art that they love. By making art more affordable everybody can be a collector!

2. The second possible meaning of this piece could be to conduct a social experiment to see who would steal a project. These rocks were placed outside of a gallery and my assumption is that people understand that they are artwork that most likely belongs to someone. I think it would be interesting to see who was stealing the rocks and be able to ask them why it is that they felt it was acceptable to do so.

Davy and Kristin McGuire. Starkers. projection mapping & marble statue

Statement: “The award-winning husband-and-wife team have built a reputation for innovative, indelible works – blending animation, projection mapping, theatre, film, dance and papercraft.” Computer Arts Magazine

Subject: This video shows a preview of the projection mapping piece ‘Starkers’ made by Davy and Kristin McGuire. In it a woman carved from marble stands in a museum with her arms raised around her neck. Forever putting on a necklace. Through projection mapping her face is animated so it looks as if she is speaking to the audience and clothes appear as if she were actually wearing them. In the video this woman speaks to her audience about what it is like to be frozen in time but how neither she or any of us are permanent in this world. She also talks about how the human form is glorified giving many examples of the obsession that humans have with other humans. She ends by saying how lovely she thinks it is that our purpose is to live and then die with our life being as unique or messy or imperfect as we chose.

Content:

1.) I think that this piece talks about our relationship with art/sculptures from the opposite perspective. We always view art but never stop to wonder about what it would be like looking back from the opposite side. Art is able to live long after it’s creator has passed away and can be viewed by millions of people. It’s interesting to think of all of the places/people/changes that art has been around for.

2.) The second possible meaning of this piece could be to point out the frailty of life. The sculpture speaks about how lovely it is that we grow, bloom, and die but also mentions that she is not permanent in this world either. She could break, the earth could reclaim her, a fire could ruin her, etc., and I think all of this is to show that life is fragile.

Walking teacups

-picture-

Subject:

For this project there are three small teacups being held up in the air by four fingers (each). The thumb acts as a handle on the teacup. Each teacup is painted with a black under glaze and is made with terracotta clay. There is a matching spoon with a finger handle.

Content:

1.) The first possible meaning of this piece could be to show how just a little bit of effort can make you successful. The teacups use only the tips of the fingers to hold up the rest of the body but using only this small push they are all successful. Even when filled with water they stay standing upright refusing to break under the pressure that weighs them down. They carry this weight around with them much like we would carry our  own troubles. I think they serve as a reminder that with just a small amount of effort many things are possible.

2.) The second possible meaning of this piece could be to create a deeper connection to the objects around the viewer. By making these teacups stand/walk is created the illusion that they are alive and makes us question whether or not the objects around us are really anything more than just objects.

Eye, 2015.

polyurethane foam, epoxy clay, epoxy gel, acrylic paint, synthetic hair, resin, glass stain, quartz, pyrite, celestite, amethyst, fluorite, steel, marble

Subject: The art piece, Eye, is a human head and neck with shades of pastel in a pattern that looks like it is painted on the skin.  It has short blond hair on the top of the head and the face is missing. A hole goes completely through the head and crystals look to be growing from the inside. These crystals are clear on the bottom and as they go higher in the head they become yellow and green at the highest point.

Content: 1. The first possible meaning of this piece could be to talk about addiction. The users head could be full of the drug and it may start out as something experimental/fun it gradually becomes something darker leaving little room for anything else in the addicts head

2. The second possible meaning of this piece could be to raise awareness for suicide and depression. The hole going through this head could be a representation of a gunshot wound and the crystals could be the thoughts that encouraged the person to go through with it. The crystals are sharp and  though they start out clear they become gradually darker.

Artist statement

My work focuses on environmental issues and issues that I feel are important. These issues are things that I feel impact more than just our daily lives but span to the entire world. Animal rights, human rights, environmental issues, and issues that have to do with right/wrong scenarios are my main focus.

In my Atomic Bomb Blast sculpture the issue I chose to address was the effect of war on children and the possible impact that we leave behind for future generations. Many things that are done today are not sustainable, they are not good for the planet, and they are also bad for us. Everything that we leave behind our children will have to deal with and they will ultimately have to choose to ignore (as many people are choosing to do today) or address these issues and try to fix them.

Project 3 : Atomic bomb blast

Subject: Standing about 6 ft tall is a cloud created from an atomic bomb. It is made out of chicken wire, paper mache, paint, and a wood beam inside to keep it standing straight. It is painted white with visible parts of the newsprint underneath showing in some sections. It has a large base cloud that dips in to three smaller levels of cloud above it. The highest level of the cloud is much bigger than the sections below and creates a mushroom shape. When complete each  level of the cloud will have a small ladder leading up to the next level and a single swing will sit on the top.

Content: 1) In a way this cloud represents how our children will need to live with the lasting effects that we are having on the earth. We are destroying the planet in a number of different ways all of which will need to be dealt with at some point and I feel that the coming generations will be paying for our mistakes long after we’re gone. By turning this atomic bomb blast in to a soft looking jungle gym it becomes something we could see our children playing on. It looks soft and friendly and the ladders leading up it suggest that it’s meant to be climbed but when looked at from a different perspective it can be seen as a scary reminder of what we are leaving behind for our children.

2) The second possible content for this piece could be to show the effects of war on children. In Syria people who have not left their homes are constantly at risk because they are in a war zone and those who have left their homes are at risk still because they have no place to go. More than 6 million people are displaced with half of them being children. These children have had to quit school, leave their homes, their friends, everything that they have known in life so far to pursue a more safe environment but they are all at risk of becoming ill, malnourished, abused, or exploited. As a child my biggest worry was making it home in time after school for my favorite TV show. Not once was I worried for my life as many of these children are. They are not having the carefree childhood that they deserve.

Influence Machine, 2015

Subject: Influence Machine is an installation that is presented in an urban park setting using a projection system to make video characters roam the landscape. These characters are projected on to trees and buildings. It features a glass harmonica and found spirit voices.

Content: 1. The first possible content of this piece could be to make a link between technology and nature. It makes the projections part of the landscape and the people who view these projections are able to see technology in a more “natural” setting.

2. The second possible meaning could be to show a link between the human world and the spirit world. These projections could be a representation of the people close to us who have passed away whose presence we still feel but we can no longer communicate with. These ghost-like projections can be seen in familiar places and may hold all of the qualities of those we have lost but they are still just an image.
